JESUS – humble and Gentle at heart

This is the only verse where JESUS opens up HIS heart to reveal who HE is. HE is humble and gentle at heart.

On this Maundy Thursday as we reflect on the last Supper and the events unfolding leading upto the crucifixion of JESUS, let’s take a closer look at JESUS’s character- humility. Knowing that HE is GOD’s Son, although HE is GOD himself, JESUS set an example to His disciples by washing their feet.

Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. Jn:13:3-5

The WORD of GOD(JESUS) through whom the entire universe and everything that exists was created HE Himself stoops down and picks up the dirty dusty feet of His disciples with HIS Sovereign Hands and washes it and wipes it clean. It is very hard to imagine thats why Peter one of His disciples wouldn’t let Him wash his feet initially. If the King of Kings Himself can do such a lowly task then neither of us can think of ourselves too highly.

12 After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. 16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. 17 Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. Jn:13:12-17

JESUS taught us to serve one another in humility.

But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mt:20:26-28

JESUS came to serve and give HIS own life as a ransom for all mankind. Let us humble ourselves like JESUS. GOD hates pride.

Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall. Prov:16:18

Whether at home or out in the world as children of GOD lets forsake pride and exhibit humility.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James:4:10

The reward for humility is great. The LORD Himself promises to lift us up.

When JESUS was mocked, beaten, spat upon and humiliated like no-one else for no fault of His own, HE never opened HIS mouth. Today how many of us can keep quite when someone insults us or gossips behind our back or accuses of wrong doing or condemns us. It’s very very difficult, our very first reaction is to retaliate and throw insults back. It’s human nature to give tit for tat. Even as we meditate on the Cross and HIS suffering, let’s learn about this beautiful character of JESUS-humility and gentleness.

JESUS was gentle. Gentleness is a fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT.

When JESUS approached sinners He wasn’t arrogant but gentle. When we are filled with the HOLY SPIRIT, gentleness becomes natural to us as its one of the fruit. A good tree produces good fruit. Let us strive to produce the good fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT even as we spend time with the LORD through HIS Word engrained within us and with the help of the HOLY SPIRIT and HIS divine guidance. When you feel most difficult to show any humility or gentleness in you life, just look to the cross, think about what JESUS did as mentioned in the below verse.

He was oppressed and treated harshly,
yet he never said a word.
He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.
And as a sheep is silent before the shearers,
he did not open his mouth. Is:53:7

JESUS the Lion of Judah took the form of a humble Lamb. How much more should we exhibit humility and gentleness!

28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Mt:11:28-30

Learn from JESUS for HE is willing to teach you. HE says “Come to me and I will teach you to be humble and gentle”. And the reward that follows is rest for our souls. Today we are carrying unnecessary burdens, strifes, hatred, bitterness and unforgiveness, let us surrender it all to JESUS and learn to be humble and gentle like HIM.

Have a blessed day!!!

Invest your 5

What do you have in your hand that GOD gave you and you are still not using? Have you ever wondered?

1.Five talents or 5 bags of silver-

“The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. Mt:25:16

Each and everyone of us have been entrusted with talents, whether it is writing, singing, playing music or encouraging others. Let us use it for the glory of GOD. Many times in our lives we become so laid back that we bury our talents and become busy in our day to day routine. Some times we are very shy to do what GOD has called us to do.

24 “Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. 25 I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’

26 “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, 27 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’ Mt:25:24-27

In the above verse the servant who hid his bag of silver instead of investing it, is condemned by the Master as wicked and lazy. Today how many of us are lazy to use our GOD given talents? Let us analyse ourselves and change.

2. Five loaves of bread-

“There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” Jn:6:9

Be generous in what GOD has given you to share freely with others. It could be your resources, time, energy and gifts/talents.

One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. Prov:11:24

When we give freely to others we gain more from the LORD. GOD loves a cheerful give.

3. Five Stones of David-

40 He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine. I Sam:17:40

David knew his strength was from GOD. Among the people of Israel David was the only one who could not bear to hear the insults of Goliath against GOD and HIS people. He knew how great and how big HIS GOD was and how with GOD’s help he could defeat the giant. Today when you face your own giants in life always know like David ‘Greater is HE that is in you than he that is in the world’. The 5 stones David picked up are nothing but a similitude of the Name of JESUS which has 5 letters. You can face any problem or obstacle with JESUS in your life

But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. I John:4:4

Always remember that with JESUS in your boat, you can face any storm in life!

4. Five Wise women with extra oil

but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil.Mt:25:4

We are living in end times, everything around us points us to the return of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.As children of GOD we are called to be watching and always ready to meet our Saviour. As the above verse mentions we are to be ready with THE OIL which represents the HOLY SPIRIT and HIS ANNOINTING. It clearly mentions that all 10 virgins had oil but only 5 carried extra oil. We might have given our lives to CHRIST and accepted Him and still living a complacent life by not spending more time with Him in HIS Word or in prayer this could lessen the oil within us.

“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!” Rev:16:15

For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. I Thes:5:2

But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. I Thes:5:4

“Now concerning that day or hour no one knows—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son—but only the Father. Watch! Be alert! For you don’t know when the time is coming”. Mark 13:32-33

Be alert and always be ready with the extra oil to keep you burning for the coming of our LORD JESUS is at hand.

Have a blessed day!
